The Fringe Wordbook: A Tome of Paranormal Definitions

Welcome to the Fringe Wordbook.   Eventually we hope to include just about every word related to the paranormal and its meaning.  So of course this will be a continuous work in progress.  If can’t find a word or have one we should add contact us below and we may add it. This is your chance to contribute to the Fringe Paranormal site and to help educate others about the paranormal

  • Abductee: Someone who claims to have had an abduction experience, in particular, abduction by extraterrestrials.
  • Abominable Snowman: AKA Yeti, a tall ape-like creature said to inhabit the Himalayan Mountains. The North American version is the Bigfoot.
  • Adept: A person skilled in the ways of the occult.
  • Adjuration: A formula used by conjurers and exorcists dealing with evil spirits. The spirit is commanded in the name of the Christian God to obey the conjurer/exorcist.
  • Apport: An object or living being that materialises from thin air in the presence of a medium. Often claimed to be a gift from the spirits.
  • Area 51: Popular name for part of a secret military base in North America, approximately 95 miles north of Las Vegas, rumoured to be home to research involving extraterrestrial beings and/or technology.
  • Area 54: Part of Area 51, rumoured to be the location of secret aircraft tests.
  • Asport: An object or living being that vanishes from a location. Can be considered the opposite of an apport.
  • Astral body: The spiritual version of the physical body, existing in the astral plane.
  • Backward blessing: The practice of reciting the Lord’s Prayer backwards, said to invoke the Devil.
  •  Bigfoot: One of many names given to a legendary ape-like creature said to live in the wilderness of North America. Bigfoot is generally regarded as the USA version of Sasquatch (Canada) and Yeti (Nepal).
  •  Bilocation: The appearance of a person in two distant places simultaneously.
  •  Bridgewater Triangle: An area in Massachusetts, USA, said to be the location of strong paranormal activity.
  •  Champ: Common name for the cryptozoological Monster of Lake Champlain.
  •  Channelling: The process of communicating with non-physical beings (spirits, etc).
  •  Chupacabra: A creature of legend said to inhabit areas of Northern and Southern America.
  •  Clairaudience: Similar to clairvoyance, but specifically related to sounds. The ability to hear paranormal voices and sounds.
  •  Clairsentience: A general term to describe “clear sensing”, or paranormal sensing ability. An umbrella term which includes clairvoyance, clairaudience, etc.
  •  Clairvoyance: French for “clear seeing”, the ability to sense paranormal people, objects, etc.
  •  Conjuration: The practice of attracting the attention and involvement of spirits by means of ritual activities.
  •  Crop Circles: Large circles and other patterns left in crop fields. Crop circles have been reported widely in England, Europe and the United States since the 1980s. Most have been shown to be hoaxes but some remain mysterious.
  •  Cryptid: Any species of animal which has not been formally identified or categorized by science, e.g. Yeti.
  •  Cryptozoology: The study and search for those animals whose present-day existence is not formally recognized by mainstream science.
  •  Death Panorama: An out-of-body experience for the newly-deceased, in which the person’s life is shown to them as a panoramic view. This experience is said to last for two to three days.
  •  Doppelgänger: In German folklore, a wraith or apparition of a living person; a “spirit double” or exact replica of a person.
  •  Ectoplasm: A viscous white substance which is said to be released from the orifice of a medium and used by spirits to take on a physical form.
  •  Etheric Body: A non-physical body of vital forces or energy, said to accompany a person’s physical body.
  •  Exorcism: The act of expelling an unwanted spirit or demon from a possessed person.
  •  Fortean phenomena: An umbrella term to describe any paranormal phenomena. Named after researcher Charles Fort (1874-1932) who spent much of his life cataloging such phenomena.
  •  Ghost: An apparition of a deceased person.
  •  Haunting: Unexplained events at a particular location, attributed to the presence of spirits or ghosts.
  •  Jersey Devil: A mythical creature said to inhabit the Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey, USA.
  •  Loch Ness Monster: A legendary creature said to inhabit the Scottish lake, Loch Ness.
  •  Materialization: The appearance of objects or living beings from thin air. A popular trick at seances in the late 19th and early 20th century.
  •  Medium: A person who is said to have the ability to communicate with the dead.
  •  Mothman: A creature reportedly sighted numerous times in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, USA, between November 1966 and November 1967. Mothman was said to be a man-sized creature with wings and large reflective or luminous eyes.
  •  Orb: A type of anomaly that appears in photographs, especially digital flash photography, in which mysterious objects appear floating in the air.
  •  Ouija Board: A board containing letters and numbers, used to make contact with spirits.
